In the most recent iteration of Popular Mechanics Automotive Excellence Awards, the 2016 Honda Accord stood out from competing sedans. This is a segment brimming with contenders, but after having visited factories, interviewed engineers, and driven everything at least once, the team at Popular Mechanics was quite taken with the 2016 Accord. Let’s take a closer look at what options, add-ons, and standard features helped make the Accord a clear winner.

Impressive Performance

One of the main things that Popular Mechanics seems to love about the 2016 Honda Accord is the fact that it doesn’t conform to the norm. It stands out from the competition with its upright roofline and powerful engine options. As one of the few midsize sedans on the market with both a 4-cylinder and a V6 engine option, it gives Malin and Keno drivers a choice that is rarely seen in other sedans. The standard 2.4L engine delivers 185 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque (or 189 hp and 182 lb-ft of torque with the Sport model), while the 3.5L V6 delivers up to 278 hp and 252 lb-ft of torque. The 2.4L engine can be paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission, and the 3.5L is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission with Sport Mode. Most of its competitors don’t have a 6-speed manual option, so this was a highly praised feature.

Standout Features

Among its standout features is its forward-thinking technology, which includes Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. It was one of the first sedans to feature these advanced mobile connectivity features, which allow drivers to access smartphone apps right on the in-dash touchscreen. In addition to this technology, each trim of the 2016 Accord can be equipped with the cutting-edge Honda Sensing suite of driver-assistance technologies. This suite includes:

  • Road Departure Mitigation
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Collision Mitigation Braking System
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Keeping Assist System
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
